Moving Day and Other Yucky Stuff
We didn't get to bed until late into the evening, actually it was after midnight, so technically it was the next day. There was a crazy party going on outside the apartments with all cast members from any show invited to attend. It was crowded and everyone brought out any leftover food that they were not going to be able to eat before they left to share with each other. There was hugging and a lot of talking about projects that were coming up next and a lot of exchanged addresses. This group of people that we lived by were such good people. I didn't have to worry about swearing, smoking or drinking for most of the summer and they treated the kids nicely. We shared meals with some of them, swam with others and helped some clean their apartments out on the last day. They have made a big impact in our lives and they will be our friends forever. It took us about 5 hours to clean the apartment and load all of our stuff before we could head to LeAnn's for a yummy dinner. Poor Maci had to fend for herself since she didn't eat her lunch when it was served and ended up finding a jar of Nutella that could hold off her hunger pangs.
We ended up leaving Jace and Olivia with the Call's for a week to play with their children. We couldn't talk Lyle into keeping Maci too:) We will meet up with them when they go to Salt Lake on Saturday to see a Josh Groban concert and pick up the kiddos. Sierra was invited to stay but has girl's camp this week and had to pass, much to her dismay. After dinner and a little visiting, we headed home and got in around 10:00 and then had to unload two very heavily packed vehicles. I wanted to wait until the morning but then decided that the help from Dave, Chad and D.J. would get the job done much faster. What a wonderful summer experience this has been! We've made so many new friends and reconnected with old ones, enjoyed the Logan 5th ward, explored beautiful, historic Cache Valley, learned a lot about the theater world and created memories to never be forgotten. This will always be a summer to remember.

| Sarah Maddock |
Thursday we had both shows to perform, South Pacific in the afternoon and Oliver that night. I bribed the little girls with the promise of Aggie Ice Cream during intermission if they could sit still for the first half of the play and they did such a good job watching South Pacific for who knows how many times. Norman and Ruth Bacalla and the Maddock Family from our ward all came up to see the kids in the shows. Brother Maddock is our home teacher and the Bacalla's are such good friends with our kids, they are real lovers of grandchildren. Norman has missed having Maci sit on his lap during sacrament meeting.
We made some great friends when we lived in Mesa, Arizona, the Eddins Family and have stayed in touch over the years. We've even taken family vacations to Idaho to see them a couple of times. They drove from Idaho to see Jace as Oliver. They came to the apartment to visit and share dinner with us before the play. Myrna and I visited about what all the grown kids were doing now while Roy taught the other little kids some swear words:) Just kidding. We tease him about being the man who taught our 3-year-old, Chad, how to swear. He enjoys kids and they sure love him and are attracted to him like metal to a magnet. The Oliver show was sold out for the evening performance so Sierra had to stay home and babysit the little girls, since I couldn't get them tickets. I didn't have a hard time finding an empty seat to sit in, even though there were only a few no shows.
Friday went we on a fun day trip to a swimming hole by the Call's house. We had to park our truck and walk about a quarter of a mile, down a foot path, over a railroad track and wade through a stream before we got to the spot. It was a beautiful, shady/part sunny spot that was lined with huge trees on both sides and it had 2 rope swings that swung out over the deeper spot in the river. It was at least 5 feet deep where the kids were dropping in. There were some cool flat rocks for skipping on the water and I even found a couple rocks that looked like a hot dog and a bun. The kids had a blast and Sierra was forced to drop into the cold water, even though she just preferred swinging back and forth on the rope. There was a little rope swing, just the right size for Maci, so she entertained herself by swinging her feet and bum into the water.
That night was a South Pacific evening show, the last one of the season and the cast did a fabulous job. There were a lot of impromptu lines and I was really impressed with how the cast helped one guy who forgot his lines, to get back on track by mentioning a key word in an added sentence. Jace and Sierra were right on track with their lines and song and with the exception of "bay" instead of "gay", their parts went well.
Saturday we went to the swimming hole again but this time, dad met us there on his way into town. He got a job in Draper, working for a company named Prosper and hasn't had the freedom to get up to Logan whenever he wants. We packed a lunch and played for a couple of hours. The Call's met us there once again and while the adults talked, the kids had fun swinging and trying to get Sierra to get into the water again. They would just stand on the bank and not let her back to shore so she would have to drop in after awhile of just hanging on to the rope. They were all trying to grab the swingers feet as they went by, trying to drag them into the water. When we got home, the Session family, from our Elk Ridge ward, came to our apartment to eat dinner with us before the show. We had a baked potato bar with salad. Olivia, Ethan and Rachel painted some pretty artwork while they were waiting for dinner to be done. The older kids watched "Soul Surfer", a movie about a surfer girl who gets her arm bitten off by a shark and goes on to become a recognized surfer. The Sessions are good company and we consider them dear friends. After berry pie and vanilla ice cream, they headed to the informance before the show and I had an hour to get ready. I packed a few boxes for them to take back to Elk Ridge with them, since Dave was afraid everything might not fit. It turns out that that was a good call on his part. They came by after the show and loaded their suburban with several boxes before heading home. The Call's also came to closing night with their children Hudson and Allie. Braxton and Mackenzie had already come earlier in the season so they didn't come but Sierra and the little girls went over to their house to keep Braxton company since MacKenzie was in Washington picking cherries for a job. LeAnn's oldest daughter Shey and her husband Dustin came and they all enjoyed the play and stayed after to take pictures and hug Jace.
Jace had to be dropped off at 5:45 for costume and make up one last time for his final performance of the season. It was sad to see it all coming to an end. Yvonne and Andraya drove up for the finale and stopped to eat a bite of dinner with us before heading to the theater. It was nice to have such good support this whole season. It is a long 3 hour drive from Elk Ridge and we appreciated everyone who took the time to fit us into their plans.
Jace had been plotting to do this since dress rehearsals but saved it until the last night of performances because he thought I would kill him:) Take a look....
Luther Billis (Stephanos), a rowdy sailor from South Pacific gets a large pirate ship tattoo before each show. They are kind of like cracker jack tattoos and go on easily. Jace came out to show me at the end of the show what he had done. I just laughed and snapped this picture. I told him that this would be the only tattoo he ever gets! I hope I was convincing:) He went home and showered it off because as it dried, it became taut and started getting itchy.

Three Days of Fun
A quick update for the last 3 days:
SUNDAY we attended church and then had a glorious nap afterwards. We went to LeAnn and Lyle's house for dinner and a slumber party, not something we do often. All of the kids played together and watched, "The Game Plan". Trying to get the boys to sleep was a joke, they wanted to "pull an all-nighter" but they stayed up shooting hoops in the boy's bedroom only until about midnight, thank goodness. LeAnn and I weeded the garden the next morning and then she made yummy baked orange French toast. We came home after an exhausting battle with the kids to stay longer.
MONDAY we came home to clean up the apartment, do laundry, and practice getting along with each other. We purchased tickets for some friends and family that will be attending the shows this week. For family night, we went on a cool bike ride to the Logan River Trail. It was beautiful and the paved trail was surrounded by huge trees, and a flowing river. Jace was the recipient of a bird's poop which landed on his leg, GROSS and also had a line of mud on his back from riding through mud puddles so fast. Sierra took a tumble on her bike just as we were about to end. She hit the bridge at the wrong angle which sent her bike flying out from under her.She got a little injury on her leg but was more embarrassed that a guy saw her fall. He asked her if she was o.k. but didn't really stop to help because he was jogging. Maci was a trooper for the most part. We rode two miles and listened to her complain about her back for most of the way. She stopped frequently to rest her aching back and pet any dog that we passed. Olivia is in need of a new bike, hers is getting to small and her knees hit the handlebars. The area was beautiful and we will try to get back there one more time before we leave. It is peaceful to hear the river water rushing by. On the way home, we looked at homes for sale and then enjoyed a breathtaking sunset.
TUESDAY I let the kids choose what they wanted to do since I had tickets to a different opera that night with Janet Rouse. They chose to go to the Logan Aquatic Center for the day. We got a discount because we were members of the opera festival and enjoyed 5 hours in the sun. I got a huge sunburn, so did Sierra on her nose. Everyone else fared pretty well. The water was the perfect temperature and the kids all had a great time. They played on the high dive, the twisty and drop slides, and Maci hung out in the kiddy pool. By the end of our time there, she was without a life jacket and going under the water a lot. I wish we lived by the pool in a warmer climate sometimes so that the kids would all be more confident in the water. We had super burritos for dinner and then I left for the opera, the kids watched t.v. amid a very messy apartment. When I got home at ten, we had a cleaning party, much to everyone's dismay, except for Jace, who asked what he could do next. I like not waking up to a huge mess. Everyone gladly went to bed and I'm sure, had a sound sleep.

More Sold-Out Performances
It is getting pretty risky to just wear my parent badge and hope to be able to get into a production and find an empty seat. Today's Oliver that I went to, I shared an over sized chair with another mother who had a boy in the play. And then at intermission, I found a seat that was vacant and made the switch to a chair of my own. The ushers were told not to let anyone with a badge in but because I was Oliver's mother I was able to squeak by. Thank goodness I have a connection to the star:)
Jace's primary class from our Logan ward came to see Oliver today and his teacher bought all six kids plus her mother a ticket. I know that wasn't cheap and she was so generous to do that for the kids. She said that some of them probably had never been to a play before and she was glad to do it for them. We made them little treat bags with goodies to eat during intermission. After the play, I took a picture of all of Jace's class from here with his teachers too. Sister Kandler said that they would really miss Jace because he participates so well in class and that he is just one of the most polite children she has ever met. She even bought Jace an Aggie ice cream to eat after the show was over. He felt very special to have his new summer friends show up to support him.
After the show, Sierra and I went on a date with the Conrad's, Melanie and Kazlie. We went to Olive Garden for dinner and then to the Don Giovanni play. It was in Italian with super titles in English above. The singing was wonderful. Rochelle Bard, the soprano has a glorious voice that is pleasant to listen to. She makes singing those high notes seem so effortless and she didn't seem to be straining at all. Jace and the girls had a water fight with some of the girls in the apartments and then got their fill of television while we were gone. It seemed as though everything went well while we were away.
Saturday morning came way too early for Jace and Sierra. They had been up late the night before and they were the guests for "Breakfast with the Stars" this morning. They had to be there at 8:30 to mingle and tell their stories about how they got to this point in their lives. I guess Sierra made everyone laugh by standing on a chair because no one could see her. Michael Ballam and Jessica Medoff were the other guests that came this morning to answer any questions people had for them. They both enjoyed this opportunity and the lemon poppy seed muffins that they got to eat.
We came home and cleaned the apartment for a bit and then Jace and Sierra had to leave to do a South Pacific matinee. We packed a lunch for them and then dropped them off and headed out for some fun. We loaded the bikes on the truck and went searching for a bike path along the river. We drove to Hyrum State Park but found that it was not what we expected and ended up at an elementary school in Hyrum instead. We had lunch there, played on the playground and then headed to the Willow Park Zoo and Park to ride around. A spinning toy kept Olivia busy for a good 1/2 hour, it was like a merry-go-round and Maci just played on the other stuff. She wanted to go on the spinning toy but it was moving too fast for her liking. We enjoyed riding bikes at this park because it was flat and had no bumps. When we ride bikes in the neighborhood, Maci is constantly stopping to get off her bike and pull it over the uneven squares of sidewalk. Because there are so many old trees in Logan, the sidewalks are quite bumpy from the roots pushing up the squares of cement and breaking some of them. Maci is nervous to ride over those, fearing that her training wheels will not keep her bike upright. She jumps off often so it takes us forever just to go around the block. At this new park, the cement was smooth and our ride was pleasant.
Tonight we went to the Call's for a BBQ and a visit. Lyle grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, I made potato salad and LeAnn cut up a watermelon. They are such good friends and the kids have sure enjoyed visiting with them. They all get along so well and we will all miss the friendships that have formed this summer. They will be the reason we come back up to visit Logan in the future. Only one more week and we will head home to a lonely dad, Chad and Hannah. We miss them and the kids are looking forward to playing with old friends before school starts. We will have to register for school when we get home and see what teachers the kids have been assigned. Something to look forward to.

Denzil Stewart Park and Foundation for a Better Life
On Wednesday, we went looking for a place to ride our bikes. We had been wanting to find a gorgeous trail to ride along and this was our big adventure for today. We followed a brochure map that we got from the Chamber of Commerce and found a little trail with kiosks all along the paved trail telling about what the area used to be like thousands of years ago. Apparently Cache Valley was under water at one time and that is why the soil here is so rich. No wonder everyone here has a vegetable garden. At the top of the mountain, we found tons of sea shells and the girls gathered up handfuls to bring home. We walked and Jace rode his bike along the trail until we came to an amphitheater and then went on a short beautiful hike up the side of a mountain. The trail was covered in shredded bark, (I love that smell) and had hundreds of wildflowers along the path. The path was shaded and it was just heavenly to behold. Someone spends lots of time maintaining the trail because there were little ceramic frogs, butterflies and other garden ornaments all along the way. Near the top of the trail, there was an amazing view of the Cache Valley and the Logan temple. A house right there would have been magnificent. When we reached the top, we had traveled from the bottom of the nature park into a well-kept neighborhood with historic houses. We looked around on foot for awhile and then decided to drive the neighborhood when we got back to the truck. We played at a fun park that had a misting system for the kids to cool off under and then came home for some lunch.
It was still dark outside when I woke up the three smallest children to drive them all to Salt Lake City for Jace to do a commercial for Foundation for a Better Life. He had to be there by 7:15 a.m. and it takes an hour and a half to drive there so we left at 5:30 and made it two minutes before call time. I had the kids stay in their pajamas and sleep while I drove but no one really slept because Maci kept talking. They changed clothes in the car while I was driving and we took a couple of minutes once we got there to brush teeth and comb hair. With two minutes to spare, we arrived in the Avenues in Salt Lake (another place I would love living. The old trees and homes are so inviting to me AND the beautiful yards.)
We finally found one and went in a bought coloring books and crayons, a backpack for Maci to take to kindergarten and polly pocket rapunzel dolls. I needed some things to keep the girls busy during the day because I knew it would be a long one and Maci isn't one to just sit for very long. We headed back to the shoot location and didn't stay very long because it was time for lunch and the actors were the only ones being served lunch and the little girls were hungry. We went to Wendy's and grabbed some fast food which the girls ate quickly because the next thing on our agenda was the splash pad at the Gateway Mall. We came prepared with swimsuits and towels this time and the girls played for a couple of hours with no complaints at all.

| The kids all got their own guest library card so they could play on the computers. |
After we dried off and got dressed, we headed to the Salt Lake library on 400 South. What a treat!!! The children's section is one whole floor of the library with furniture just their size and lots of cubbies to sit and read in. Bean bag chairs and comfy, quiet places to peruse through books were everywhere. It was excellent! Plus the had about 20 computers for the kids to play on, either on the internet, or they had a ton of educational games on the desktops of the computers for the littler kiddos. Soon after we got there we got a call, picked up Jace and returned to the library. The kids rode in the glass elevator where you can see all the mechanics of the elevator and look out at everyone as you travel up and down to each floor. I think that was the highlight for the kids at the library. We grabbed a bite to eat at McDonald's, all because it had a playplace and then began the long journey home. What a day! Glad it's over and now I'm going to shower and head to bed. It has been a long, but fun, day. I forgot to mention that Sierra had tickets to a show called, Little Shop of Horrors, and chose to stay home and go to that. She really enjoyed the quietness and going to the show with Jeanette Blakeney, her new opera friend. They made pasta roni and ate caramel corn while watching a movie after the play. Sierra also forgot to water her plants and they looked dead when I got home. We will see if they survived her neglect:)

Family Night Barbecue and Caine Lyric Opera
On Monday we went school clothes shopping in shifts. Sierra and Maci got their turns last week, and Jace and Olivia got their turns today. We started out looking for pants for Jace since he seems to only have 2 pairs of shorts that he wears constantly here. People are going to think he only owns 2 outfits because he wears the same thing all of the time. We found 3 pairs of nice jeans and 2 pairs of shorts at D.I. for 2 and 3 dollars each. I had already purchased some shirts for him the last time I was in Elk Ridge so he is pretty set for school. We bought a couple of things at Walmart and he was done. Boys are so much easier than girls. He just wanted basic t-shirts. The one thing that he was a little picky about was a pair of skinny jeans. He was looking for black and we didn't find any so he is waiting for just the right pair before he buys those. He bought his own tennis shoes because he wanted to spend a fortune on them and was willing to use his own money to get what he wanted instead of what I wanted. They are pretty flashy skate shoes.
Next up was Olivia. She wanted to go to JCPenney because she saw the cute clothes that Sierra got there for school. She wanted to copy Sierra's shirt choices but I only let her copy one. Copying is the nicest form of flattery, but Sierra was not flattered. It was more like annoyed. Olivia likes sparkly and it was hard to let her buy glittery stuff but I did allow one shirt with many sequins and glitter. She was happy. I found all of the girls some cute shirts in the morning and then when I took her shopping, she found a few that were things she liked and feels good about her choices for school. She came home and showed everyone her new clothes. All of the kids are getting excited for school to start and to see their friends again.
For family night we were invited to the Conrad's for a Barbecue. The made sloppy joes and dutch oven Chicken Italiano that was delicious. We took taquitos and cilantro dressing and chips and salsa. A few of the actors and actresses from our apartments were also invited and we played just dance on the wii. After the actors and actresses left, we watched the new Karate Kid down in the Conrad's theater. It was really late when we got home and into bed. Maci was a nightmare at their house, not happy about much that was going on. She didn't want to eat anything but junk for dinner but wanted dessert so I had to insist that she eat dinner or no treats. She threw a temper tantrum during the movie so I made her sit in the truck and cry so we could hear the movie. I distracted her from crying by asking her if she wanted to come with me to walk Coco the dog around the block. She jumped at the chance because she loves Coco and ran practically the whole way around the block until we came to a huge St. Bernard that came running after us. I had to pick up Coco, yell at the St. Bernard to go home, and calm Maci all at the same time. Maci is a lot of work in case you haven't gathered that. I get advice from well-meaning friends and family all of the time on how to raise Maci but I've tried most of the suggestions I'm given and have decided that she is just her own person. I try to be patient with her, but sometimes she gets the best of me. I love the little dear and hope that in the end she will feel that she is loved and that I won't squash her spirit too much.
Today we took it easy in the morning, slept in and had breakfast at 11:00. I guess everyone was tired from all the activities on Monday. We did a little laundry, made quiche for dinner with some Ciabatta bread we bought at Crumb Brother's Bakery, Jace went to a play at the Lyric Theater to watch, "See How They Run" with Owen and the kids had their last art class with Janet and Owen Rouse (her 14 year old son) and learned how to do origami.
Janet does the artwork on the chalkboards at Crumb Brothers and she did the big front board in honor of Jace because she recently went and saw Oliver. She drew a boy holding out his hands and asking, "Please sir, I want some more". She also advertised on the board for UFOMT so that was a good plug for the company. Olivia also went to activity day at the church and got some hand-me-down clothes from Hayley Morrill, which she liked. We played several games of Egyptian Rat Killer but I never won. I'm just learning but slowly I'm getting better.
I forgot to mention that LeAnn came by today and hung out for 40 minutes. She has been having trouble with a tooth in her mouth since the beginning of summer and today the dentist tried to remove it but had a very difficult time. She was in the dentist chair for 2 hours. She had to go back a little later and didn't want to drive all the way home so she came over for a visit. While she was here, MaciLeAnn who was sitting on the couch. The biggest glob landed right in LeAnn's hair and she was such a good sport about it that she had all of us laughing our heads off.

We've been driving around town looking at the different neighborhoods and houses. There are some really pretty places here and we love every inch of Logan. Someone told us that Michael Ballam's house is on the cliffside and that it is pink so we went searching last Sunday as we were driving around. Didn't find it but enjoyed looking at the "castle" houses (that's what the kids call them) in that section of town. The yards here are so beautiful with all of the different colors of flowers in bloom and it seems as if everyone has a vegetable garden producing food. There are a lot of old homes with such Victorian style that I love, a lot of stone, brick and fish scale siding. We attended "Musica Magnifica" on Saturday night and the kids told Michael Ballam that we had been searching for his house. Talk about embarrassing! He came over to me and gave me his address and told me to bring the kids by to play in the large sandbox he has in his backyard. I could have crawled under a rock! Why don't kids understand what's socially proper?:) Anyway, he was really nice about the whole creepy stalking thing. After the program we went with the Conrad's to Angie's and ordered two kitchen sinks full of ice cream. There is enough ice cream in the sinks for a huge crowd and we didn't even come close to finishing either one but they were sure good.

Jace and Sierra In the Herald Journal
Oliver!
For those who hate to read the Victorian Era soap operas written by Charles Dickens but love musical comedy, the Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre's flawless production of "Oliver!" is the perfect summer treat.
Because the quality of productions of this Lionel Bart musical depend so heavily on the performances of youngsters, it takes inspired casting and direction to stage this show in an entertaining fashion. Luckily, director Jack Shouse has pulled off that miracle here in Logan.
Eleven-year-old Jace Salcido takes the role of the orphan Oliver Twist and makes it his own from the first moment that he opens his mouth to sing. He not only has an amazingly strong voice for his diminutive size, but also one that is so sweet that it sends chills through the audience. Moreover, despite being a newcomer to the stage, Salcido has nothing to apologize for as a novice actor.
Cameron Conrad is equally well-cast as Oliver's sidekick, the Artful Dodger, and 16 other boys sing and act with remarkable aplomb for their ages as members of the show's orphan/street urchin choruses.
With the youthful actors carrying their own weight, the adults in "Oliver!" are free to perform at the top of their game and they do just that. The cast is led by Jessica Medoff in the role of Nancy, a woman of the street who is torn between her love for outlaw Bill Sykes and her protective instincts toward Oliver. Aided by a booming lyric soprano voice, Medoff dominates the stage with breathtaking acting and dancing skills.
The contributions of the adult ensemble to the success of this production cannot be ignored. Those talented singers open Act II with a rollicking performance of the tavern song "Oom Pah Pah" that had the audience cheering during the premier of "Oliver!" on July 7. Minutes later, the same audience was thrilled by the sheer beauty of their rendition of the haunting "Who Will Buy?"
The highlight of this show is naturally the appearance of Logan impresario Michael Ballam in its cast. In recent years, the founding general director of UFOMT has resisted the temptation to hog the spotlight by limiting himself to age-appropriate minor roles in the festival's productions. In the pivotal role of Fagan, however, Ballam returns to center stage where he belongs. The veteran trouper makes even a nuanced characterization like that of Fagan look easy because - for him - it is easy. Ballam's standout performances of the songs "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two," "Be Back Soon" and "Reviewing the Situation" are simply unforgettable.
The orchestra for "Oliver!" is brilliantly directed by Karen Keltner, the resident conductor of the San Diego Opera. The set designs by Dennis Hassan are appropriately moody and atmospheric.
Repertory performances of Oliver! will continue at the Ellen Eccles Theatre through Aug. 6.
The paper had a photo of Sierra and Jace eating soup at the end of the South Pacific show with Emile and Nellie but when I went to import it, for some reason the internet version does not have that photo but a different one. I had to take a photo of the photo with my camera phone so it isn't as clear as the one in the paper but Sierra was happy to be featured in the newspaper too.
South Pacific
The Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre's ongoing production of "South Pacific" successfully breathes life into familiar dramatic material that is more than half-a-century old.
"South Pacific," a tale of clashing cultures and people cut adrift from their roots by World War II, was penned by Broadway giants Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II only four years after the conclusion of that conflict. While that made the musical unusually topical in 1949, sophisticated modern audiences tend to view "South Pacific" as hopelessly romantic and chock full of wartime clichés. Moreover, the racial prejudice subplot that emerges in the second act of the musical is so dated that it feels contrived.
A common solution to those problems nowadays might be to play for self-conscious laughs by turning "South Pacific" into a campy nostalgia fest. But here in Logan, director Maggie L. Harrer has chosen a riskier approach by playing the musical straight and trusting in the talents of her performers to make the original material seem still relevant.
Harrer's gamble pays off richly in the person of Molly Mustonen, a Minnesota native making her UFOMT debut as U.S. Navy Ensign Nellie Forbush. Mustonen plays that role with such wide-eyed innocence that she not only makes the improbable reactions of the self-proclaimed "hick from Little Rock" to her first romance believable, but also infects her fellow cast members and the audience with her enthusiasm. From its opening curtain, this UFOMT production is Mustonen's show; it is her spirited singing and dancing that makes some of the musical's well-known production numbers work.
Mustonen is supported by an outstanding cast. Branch Fields provides her love interest as French planter Emile de Becque and his powerful bass voice makes the musical's trademark songs "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine" memorable. Jeanette Blakeney is delightfully exuberant as the Tonkinese businesswoman Bloody Mary. UFOMT veteran Mark Womack turns in a solid performance as Marine Lieutenant Joe Cable as does crowd pleaser Stephanous Tsirakoglou as the seagoing con man Luther Billis.
After a nearly letter-perfect debut performance, some gaffs that would be considered wardrobe errors in the movie business emerged toward the end of "South Pacific." While an enlisted combat engineer who has "gone native" like Billis could easily get away with missing a few shaves, a full beard and shaggy haircut would never have been tolerated on a naval officer flying a PBY seaplane. It's even more jarring when Billis converses with a couple of what he calls "Marines" who are conspicuously dressed as sailors. UFOMT's audiences include too many military veterans for errors of that kind to escape notice.
Repertory performances of "South Pacific" will continue at the Ellen Eccles Theatre through Aug. 5.

The Art of Capturing Ladybugs
Dad came on Friday and stayed until this morning. He didn't have a Sunday white shirt so he headed home so that he could attend his own ward. Our church membership records have been moved up here so we stayed for our own ward. I love Logan and so do the kids. We're still trying to convince dad that this would be a good move:) We went driving around the city today looking for and taking information on homes that were for sale. There is a really nice area called Cliffside but I think that I like the area over by the college the best. I would love to buy an old house and restore it. There are some great ones that have the Logan river running right through their backyards and it would be so soothing to have the "stream" sound to lull us to sleep at night. It would kind of be like living near the beach.
We have decided to hang all of our art class artwork on the bare white walls of our apartment to bring some color to these dull walls. The kids have really enjoyed the watercoloring classes they have been taking from a new friend in the ward, Janet Rouse. She encourages them all with such positive words and has supplied them each with a sketch pad and set of watercolors for creating their masterpieces.
Tonight we went for a walk to the park and captured some ladybugs to put in our garden. We have something that is eating the leaves on a couple of our plants and a family of earwigs have taken up residency in our basil herb. We hope that the ladybugs will be harsh apartment managers and kick the earwigs out:)

Oliver #3 with the Salcido Side of the Family
Lots of company came on the 15th from the Salcido side of the family. What great supporters they are and what fun we had visiting with them. We had the traditional taquitos, salsa and chips, rice and beans waiting for all of our guests when they arrived. They might think it is the only meal I know how to cook:) Chelsea and Eric, Uncle Jerry, Spencer and Shenelle (came all the way from Palo Alto, California) and Dave and Amanda made the 3 hour trek from Elk Ridge to see show #3. It was an "almost" sell-out with just a few seats left available for last minute ticket buyers. I actually got to sit on the front row and watch Jace from that great seat. Michael Ballam has about 8 seats right there that are reserved for him and his family and his son Benjamin, told us that no one was coming and that we were welcome to sit there. However, right before the show began, some nieces and nephews showed up with their parents and Dave went to find somewhere else to sit. Sierra and I stayed because there was enough room for us. At intermission, I changed seats with Amanda, who was up in the nosebleed section, so I could take care of the two little girls and give her a break. It was so much fun to have family there. Everyone loved Jace and his head is exploding with all of the compliments. We're talking about finding a show every summer so we can vacation in a different spot each year. Next year we decided to look at the San Diego opera because we love Oceanside and that would be a great place to be for the whole summer:)
Today we traveled to Bear Lake again, this time to an official beach with sand. The water was pretty cold but the kids didn't seem to mind too much. They all got in, except Sierra, who was working on her tan and trying to finish her book, The Last Olympian. Dave and I just sat and enjoyed the wind and sun and mostly the shade. Monday and Tuesday we will be going camping with the Call Family near Bear Lake. Looking forward those days. We're also looking forward to next week when friends and my side of the family will be attending the shows to see Sierra and Jace.

The Troops Return
What a glorious, quiet four days of doing whatever I wanted. I fit in reading books, lunch with a friend, laundry, shopping, watching movies, eating treats, bikeriding, dinner with D.J., a couple of yummy home-cooked dinners with LeAnn, visiting, sewing, crafting and listening to the music and talks that I like. It was heavenly. Remind me again why Heavenly Father wants us to live as families:)
Truly, I did miss everyone and all the smiles and talking but every now and again, I appreciate the quietness of being alone.
I met Dave in Salt Lake today at the Gateway Mall to exchange vehicles and pick up the kiddos. They all looked like they needed a mother when they got there. No one had combed hair, Maci was in winter clothes(it was 90 degrees out), had her furry boots on, Olivia's hair was atrocious, she had on highwater pants and tennis shoes with socks and Jace had on a dirty shirt that had food on it. Maybe I'm a little bit overboard, but they need me and my militant ways around:) We let them play in the water jets that come out of the ground for about a half hour before we all headed our separate ways. Dave leaves for Washington State for a month for training for his new job. He was hired by Dex and will be working in Murray (about 45 minutes away) after the training. I feel very grateful that he has found employment, it gives me a sense of security. The Salcido family is coming up to Logan on Friday to see Jace in Oliver. Shenelle and Spencer Williams, Jerry, Yvonne, Chelsea and Eric, Andraya and Larissa and maybe some others. Dave will be coming up then to be here when his family is here and then will fly to Washington on Sunday. After everyone goes home, I think we are going to go camping since our next performance will be 5 days later.

Opening Night and Other News
This will be the Reader's Digest condensed version of our week. We have been so busy with Opening performances and that whole weekend. We had a lot of fun with the whole gang here for opening night of Oliver and South Pacific. Aunt Sheila flew in from California to watch the child stars:)
She sure is fun to have around and such a builder of children. She always says such nice things to them and really treats them well whenever she is around. She is also so supportive of family events that go on like weddings and graduations. We love when she comes. Krista Liddiard, Sierra's friend from Elk Ridge, came up with Dave, Sheila, Hannah and Amanda. We had a full house but Sierra was glad to see Krista. All of the kids have really missed their friends since we moved to Logan but they have made some great new friends here too. Jace has loved hanging out with the artful dodger, (Cameron Conrad), Sierra has made some friends at the ward we attend and is excited to go to youth conference with this ward here, Olivia made a couple of friends from the ward and has taken a little art class with Haley Morrill, and Maci went to play with Paris Craney last week, one of the girls whose dad plays the doctor in Oliver. The kids did really well and remembered all of their lines and cues for the songs. It was only a tiny bit nerve racking for Jace. Cameron Conrad came over during the day and taught Jace by example that he didn't need to stress, it was just another performance like they had been practicing for the last month. The clapping after each number threw some of the timing off for lines that generally went much faster but with the noise of the applause, the actors had to readjust their timing. On opening night, the actors and actresses give each other a small gift to wish each other good luck (we'll have to remember this for the future since we didn't buy anyone anything) and Michael Ballam gave Jace the coolest framed picture of himself as the Artful dodger in 1966 with a sweet inscription on the picture telling Jace that he was the sweetest Oliver to ever grace any stage and that he had the voice of an angel. Beside that picture is a picture of Jace and Cameron Conrad dressed in their Oliver costumes. Coolest thing ever!! Jace wants it to hang in his room. Michael told him in years to come he may want to use it as a dart board but Jace assured him it would never be used in that way. He is such a thoughtful mentor for Jace.
South Pacific went well also. It was an afternoon performance for the opening and Sierra and Jace both did a great job and showed up when they were supposed to and said and sang all the right words. In the second performance, Sierra thought she made a noticeable mistake in one of her scenes but it was only obvious to her. Dave and Jace and I went to the opening night of Boris Gudinov and that was a very difficult opera to sit through. It was extremely non melodic and even though the singers were wonderful, it is such a somber opera. We left at intermission and took Jace to get a banana split at Angie's restaurant. It was a much better choice:)
On Saturday we went to the park and ate free chick-fil-a sandwiches and freshly-squeezed lemonade that they were giving away as a promotion. Those were yummy.
Jace and Sierra had Oliver in the morning and South Pacific that night. Jace especially had a busy day with two plays in one day.
I fit in the swimming pool trip with Olivia and Maci for a couple of hours between shows and then Hannah watched the little girls while Dave, Krista, Amanda and I went to the night time showing of South Pacific. The lifeguard was preoccupied when Maci came down the slide so Maci went under water for about 1 second before the lifeguard scooped her up and let her ride to the side of the pool on the lifepreserver. Maci said she is never going on the slide again! Olivia spent her whole time at the pool on the slides, especially the one that went straight down! She is fearless!! Sierra and Krista rode the buses around town and bought ginormous rings from the sidewalk sale.(including one for Nathan Oliver) They had ice cream and jamba juice and just goofed around all day.
Dave volunteered, with no suggestion on my part, to take the little girls home for the 4 days that there aren't any plays going on. I was going to go with him until I found out that my best childhood friend LeAnn Call, who lives 15 minutes away from here, was staying home all alone for the week because her husband took their kids to Arizona for the week. So now I have these next 4 days to spend doing whatever I want:)!!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!! I got to take the nicest, non-interrupted nap for two whole hours today. What a treat! On Tuesday I am going to go and see all of the temples in Northern Utah, (four of them) and do sessions at the ones that aren't closed.
I do not miss the noise and the fighting but I do miss the laughing and company of everyone and glad that I am the mother of many children.

Dress Rehearsal Videos for Oliver
So I learned how to upload videos to the blog in a faster way tonight. Sorry it took so long to get these videos on but I could not figure out how to get them on youtube but a smart teenager showed me how to do it:) I can't remember what we've done exactly but I know we went to a car show on Main Street in Logan on Saturday night. Sunday we went to church and then went to a singing program at the college under the shade trees to listen to Vanessa Schukis, one of the women in the opera here. She sings with a grouchy voice in Oliver and when we listened to her sing spiritual songs, she sounded beautiful. During the last number when the crowd was listening to a quartet singing a fabulous number, Maci started screaming her head off and running toward me yelling, “Mommy! Mommy!!”. She was being bitten by something and so I lifted her shirt up and brushed away a big black ant. It had bitten her twice and I was worried that there may be more ants so I walked a little distance away from the crowd to lift up her shirt. Poor thing! I felt so bad for her and at the same time I was embarrassed that she was so loud during the final number. That will be the last time that I take kids to the Sunday singing on the grass.
Today (July 4th) Jace went golfing with Cameron, Brennan, Braxton, and Justin Conrad. It was his first time and he had a great time with his friends. The girls all went to an art class that Janet Rouse volunteered to teach them. They are going to her house everyday for the whole week to learn watercolors, chalk, leaf rubbings, drawing and origami, along with some other things. They came home with a new sketch pad and water colors today to practice with. They spent part of the afternoon painting.
I cooked food for the barbecue that we had tonight at the Conrad's. We had these hamburgers that sound really strange, but actually taste fabulous. They had: (are you ready for this?) toasted bun, hamburger patty, cheese, grilled pineapple slice, sliced beets, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, fried egg, bacon and avocado. They were impossible to eat without making a mess but so yummy! I don't know if I can eat a burger without beets or eggs again. In addition to the Conrad's, Jessica and Michael Medoff (Nancy in Oliver) came over, along with Laura Quest (Mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver) and we played Just Dance with them. They were interesting to talk with. Afterwards, the kids watched movies in the downstairs theater while Braxton showed me how to do the videos on my computer and then we lit some fireworks outside and got home too late. The kids didn't get in bed til about 11:30 and Jace has a 9:00 call in the morning for Oliver. Hope everyone sleeps soundly and is well rested tomorrow. We might need a nap:)

Fireworks!!!
Friday was a full run through with the orchestra for Oliver! They only had to stop a few times to wait for the set people or start the song over when a cue was missed, but overall the play looks great. I recorded some of the play on my flip video but it is a little difficult to watch because it is so far away from the stage and the sound isn't very good quality, but if you want to get a general idea of what the play might be like, here are the links: http://youtu.be/DPudmjQYxVE, We only have one more dress rehearsal before opening night before the whole family comes to watch what a little star we have in our house. After Jace sang his first song, Amanda leaned over to me and said, "You must be a very proud mother." I am. The debut for Sierra's play is the 8th of July and we can hardly wait to see her too. Such talented little kids in the fam:) Sierra likes her costumes for her play, they are all cute. Jace isn't really fond of his South Pacific high-waisted Hawaiian shorts with a white Sunday shirt tucked into them and white knee socks with white keds. He feels kind of nerdy but that's what D.J., Chad and Benjamin used to wear when they were little (minus the socks). Those high-waisted shorts were in, but now the saggy, show-your-boxer kind of pants are the rage.
So while Jace was at practice, we made treats to eat while we watched fireworks. We had rice krispie treats and capri suns, plus a bunch of other junk. One thing I like about Amanda staying here is that she cooks for us. I didn't even ask her to make dinner and she made us some yummy chicken stroganoff. We took some down to Jace and his friend Cameron while they were at practice. They had to go at 5:00 and we weren't quite finished with it by the time they left. Cameron and Brennen (his brother) came over to play during the day with Jace and Olivia. Kazlie (Cameron's sister) invited Sierra to go to her house to hang out before the fireworks. I really love this family and the kids seem to all get along really well. We are having a bbq with them for the fourth of July. Hopefully Dave and Hannah will make it up here to spend the holiday with the family. Hannah has a job interview on Tuesday so she can't stay long.
The director released all of the boys at 10:00 so they could go see the fireworks. Thankfully the show didn't start til about 10:15 so they were able to see the whole thing. The Conrad's put out blankets on a field right by the fireworks, so we had a perfect spot to watch the colorful sky. It was a pretty impressive show!

Willow Park Zoo and Date Night with Manda
Had a fun day off with the all the kids. We went to the Willow Park and Zoo which was small but very fun. They had a scary aggressive peacock that jumped right up on top of the four foot fence when Amanda played back the call it made when we got close to the baby peacock. She recorded it on her iphone and when she played it back, it got all nervous and started looking around for another bird. The zookeeper said that the peacock occasionally flies out of the pen, but he has never seen it attack anyone before. It was a beautiful day at the park afterwards and as usual, Maci had a new friend that she was exchanging phone numbers with. We came home after playing for a bit and made lunch and then I went to do laundry at the laundromat and take Sierra to get an eye examination for contact lenses while the others stayed here to nap and watch a movie from the library.
Sierra did such a good job putting in and taking out contact lenses that it seemed like she had done it before when really this was her first time. We had potato soup and Red Lobster biscuits for dinner and then Amanda and I went on a date. We walked around the historic district on 100 North and Main St. It has a bunch of old homes that have been converted into cute little salons, coffee houses, diners and little boutique type places. There is a bicycle shop that I need to take my bike to to get the flats fixed so I can ride with the kiddos. I think I'll do that in the morning. After walking around, we went to a little restaurant called Angie's and got a hot fudge brownie sundae that seriously could have fed all of us for $6. Amanda and I barely made a dent in the thing. We had a good talk about marriage and important stuff that young adults talk about. Amanda is a fun girl to hang out with and I'm glad she is here. She will be staying in Utah about 3 more weeks before heading back to New York for her new nanny job that will only be 5 minutes away from Wadi. She really loves him and is excited to get back to him. They haven't been together since May 28th so it will have been almost 2 months by the time they get to see each other again.
Tomorrow's practice schedule is from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm, which is such a bummer because the firework show is at 9:30 or ten ish. I'm hoping that the director will let all of the little boys go early to see the fireworks but I guess that will depend on how well they're doing. Either way, Amanda or I will go with the other kids to see the display while the other one waits for Jace.
